Before a wood engraving can be reproduced in a journal or a modern book it must first be printed. Every impression taken directly from a woodblock is an original print, not a reproduction. Prints in books are also originals if they were printed directly from the wood. The quality of the printing determines whether the print is good or bad, worth treasuring or discarding. Hand presses are the very best tools for a printer to use to give life to a wood block. It takes a great deal of experience and skill to bring out of the woodblock that which was engraved into it, be the block a few hours or several centuries old.
